Census 2000 Products
Information Available From the 22nd Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000)
Census 2000 is the largest peacetime effort in the history of the United States. Information about the 118 million housing units and the 275 million people across the United States will be available in a variety of formats and media, including the Internet, CD-ROMs, DVDs and printed reports. The following is a brief introduction to the information that will
be available from Census 2000, Census. For more information visit the Census Bureau's web site (www.census.gov).
Information Available from the 22nd Census of Population and Housing
100 percent characteristics: A limited number of questions are asked of every person and housing unit in the United States. Information is available on:
- Household relationship
- Sex
- Age
- Hispanic or Latino origin

- Tenure (home is owned/rented)
- Vacancy characteristics

Sample characteristics: Additional questions are asked of a sample (generally 1-in-6) of persons and housing units. Data are provided on:

Census 2000 Data products: Detailed results of Census 2000 will be contained in a series of 5 files that you can access through the Internet. For easy access to all Census 2000 information, click on American FactFinder on the Census Bureau's home page (www.census.gov). Generally, most data products
will be released first on the Internet, followed by subsequent release in other formats.
The following release dates are preliminary and may be revised later:
Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) Summary File: March 2001
Required data for local redistricting. The data will include tabulations by 63 race categories, cross tabulated by "not Hispanic or Latino" for the total population and the population over 18 years and older.
Summary File 1 (SF 1): June 2001–June 2002
Presents counts and basic cross tabulations of information collected from all people and housing units. This information includes age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and whether the residence is owned or rented. Data will be available down to the block level for many tabulation , but only down to the tract level for others.
Summary File 3 (SF3): August–December 2002
This will be the first release of the information collected on a sample basis. Data will be provided down to the block group for many tabulations but only down to the tract level for others. SF3 will also include data by Zip Code Tabulation Area and Congressional District.
